Muay Thai vs Taekwondo
A lot of discussion has been going on for a number of years, even in our hometown of Woodbridge, VA, as to Muay Thai Vs Taekwondo. This may be an older topic for some of you, but it’s worth discussing again as an eye opener for tactical approach to kickboxing. Whether you have a solid foundation in Muay Thai aka Thai Boxing, or a more traditional upbringing in the classical arts of Taekwondo or Karate, each art must be understood if you preparing to try your skills in competition (street or sport).
One Style, One Instructor Only Mentality
If you’ve only trained in one art with one instructor, it may be a challenge for you to realize the advantages of both styles. In the end however, a kick is a kick and a punch is a punch…as Bruce Lee indicated often in the Tao of Jeet Kune Do.
Kick with the Foot, the Shin, the Heel, the Toes, etc.
It can be delivered in various angles with a wide range of intents; to distract, to set up, to frustrate, to knock out, etc. You can kick with the shin or foot, with the heel or toes, utilizing all of the body’s natural weapons. You can evade any type of kick with good footwork and timing.
The Problem of NOT considering other Styles
Mixing styles and studying the way different practioners train in their Taekwondo classes, or Thai Boxing classes is important. Mixed Martial Arts competition has taught us a lot about keeping an open mind. A Taekwondo expert who becomes proficient in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu all of a sudden is a completely different fighter. Once you become fearful of his ground skills, you might be open to his stand up skills.
